Connect with Your Community in 2024
There are a lot of great ways to connect with the City of Charlotte, local government, and your community - or just have fun - this week.
Here are a few editor’s picks - including one tonight:
Charlotte Critical Mass
Every month, Charlotte Critical Mass holds a social ride to advocate for multi-modal transportation, something that’s even more important as the City of Charlotte considers a “roads first” mobility strategy.
Charlotte has anywhere from 70-100 vehicle-related deaths every year, and many of those are pedestrians and cyclists, so there’s concern that a “roads first” approach would conflict with the City’s adopted “Vision Zero” goal of zero traffic fatalities.
You can grab your wheels and join Charlotte Critical Mass at First Ward Park in Uptown at 6:45 PM tonight, Friday, January 26. No RSVP Required.
City of Charlotte’s Budget 101
The City of Charlotte has a $3 Billion budget, which includes major expenditures for Charlotte Water, the airport, Charlotte Fire Department, CMPD, and city services. Be a better-informed Charlottean by attending this session and learning more about where your property tax and sales tax dollars are spent.
The next session is on Tuesday, January 30 at 6:00 PM at Camp North End (on the Graham St. side). RSVP is highly encouraged.
Independence Library Book Sale
Independence Regional Library (6000 Conference Dr, Charlotte, NC 28212) is hosting a book sale this Saturday, Jan. 27 from 9 AM to 1 PM. A wide selection of materials will be available.
According to a recent Economist/YouGov poll, “of 1,500 Americans surveyed, a less-than-ideal 46 percent finished zero books last year.” If you don’t have a library card or anything new to read, this is your chance.
Counterculture Festival 2024
Don’t let the glasses fool you - the Counterculture Festival is a craft nonalcoholic beverage fest. If you’re looking for some local culture that doesn’t involve booze and beer, you can join in starting at 2 PM on Saturday at Camp North End (1701 N. Graham St. Ste. 200, Charlotte, NC 28206).
Tickets start at $37 and are available here.
