There’s a lot of great theater waiting for you in and around Charlotte this month.
This weekend, Three Bone Theatre’s Mary Jane - read Jesse’s review - and Lee Street Theatre’s Misery close their runs, while Davidson Community Players opens The Minutes on Thursday.
Nominated for Best Play at the 2022 Tony Award, The Minutes is a dark comedy about the agony and the ecstasy of small-town government. When an upstart young councilman returns from a brief leave of absence to find minutes missing from the previous meeting, he senses something awful is being kept from him. What happened at the town council last week?

Last Week at Soccer Sheet
Professional soccer has returned to Charlotte! The USL Super League’s Carolina Ascent FC returned on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Lexington SC at American Legion Memorial Stadium. Mia Corbin scored her fourth goal of the season, and goalkeeper Meagan McClelland earned her 39th save of the year.
The Ascent’s next match is this Sunday, February 23, at 3:00 PM. Doors open at 1:30 PM. The giveaway is one of the best of the season: custom kids jerseys in sizes Youth Large and Youth XL.
McClelland currently leads the league in both saves and clean sheets (shutouts), but she told Soccer Sheet in an exclusive interview last week how important her teammates are to her success:
“I think as a as a soccer player, you always want to improve. That's what makes everyone the best of what they do,” McClelland told Soccer Sheet. “I feel like my team always makes my job easy. Those girls are, you know, throwing their bodies on the ground, blocking shots running around like crazy for 90 minutes. So a lot of credit to them. I just save the ball when it comes to me, but they're the ones that do all the magic and defend me and keep me safe. But I think just improving as a team, creating that chemistry.
“And still, you know, getting better, getting to know each other. A lot of things happen kind of in the off season, new faces, new players. But I think we just want to focus on raising the quality even more, not giving up silly goals or not missing wide open shots.
“Instead of squeaking by teams, or just surviving teams, or just losing by a goal by teams, we want to come out and start making statements and beating teams by a lot more; just making our jobs easier. And I think, that all starts with as being as a team and building that camaraderie.
Our big breaking story last week was the announcement from the United Soccer League (USL) that they’re gearing up to start another Division I professional soccer league in the United States. While the DI status would technically make the new league a direct competitor with Major League Soccer (MLS), we spoke with USL clubs, league officials, and owners to produce a comprehensive story on the new league.
